Emily Bender Morrison

Bio:

Emily Bender Morrison (Born Jacksonville FL. She/her) graduated magna cum laude from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY with a degree in fine arts: painting. She first explored glass in undergrad and continued to explore the medium at Northlands Creative Glass in Lybster, Scotland. She worked for 8 years as a glass fabricator, working closely with artists to execute their visions in glass. Such work has been exhibited internationally and at institutions such as The Storm King Art Center. In 2018 she started the Funfetti Collection; a line of drinkware and home goods that playfully celebrate the beauty of the discarded. The Funfetti Collection exists in tandem with her fine art practice.  She currently lives in Asheville, NC with her cat Lisa.

Artist Statement:

I am a multidisciplinary artist specializing in glass. The core of my practice is a playful exploration of materiality informed by a deep love and curiosity for the messy, funny and fragile.  Intimacy and queerness playfully meld through the rainbow constellations of overlapping and repetitive forms as well as the space and tension between them. The material connotations of glass alongside the indulgent color palette provoke feelings of vulnerability and decadence. My work is inspired by gummy candy, rainbow cereals, and just how delightfully silly it is to fall in love. It is my hope the viewer is startled into basking in these queer and pleasant feelings.
